Why can’t people throw rice at weddings anymore?

More recently, wedding meddlers have cautioned against throwing rice because it can kill birds who swoop down and eat it after the human revelers have left for the reception. The rice grains, absorbent as they are, supposedly start sucking up water in the birds’ moist innards and cause them to violently burst.

When did they stop throwing rice at weddings?

The rumor that birds would eat rice thrown at weddings and subsequently, um, explode (sorry for the visual) became so problematic that state legislation was passed in 1985 banning the traditional tossing of rice.

Do birds explode after eating rice?

The rumor is that uncooked rice hits the bird’s tummy and then swells causing its stomach to explode. It’s simply not true. It’s not hot enough in a bird’s stomach to actually “cook” the rice. So, the rice doesn’t swell and cause any sort of an explosion.
